The record-breaking government shutdown turned off SNAP benefits for the first time since its inception. Springfield has the highest percentage of SNAP clients per municipality in Massachusetts. Nearly half of Springfield’s population is SNAP clients. For Charlie Knight and Diana Grau-Lopez, like many, getting by is still a daily struggle — even with public assistance.
